New International Water Strategy of Finland

New International Water Strategy of Finland was published in August 2018. The strategy suggests that Finland is
in a unique position to provide sustainable water solutions for our partners worldwide. Finland is committed to achieving all global water targets of the 2030 Agenda and to promote policies and take actions to reach the targets in time. Therefore, the international water strategy of Finland from the year 2009 has now been revised and enhanced to match the ambition and aspirations of the 2030 Agenda. The updated Strategy introduces the concept of the Finnish Water Way. The Finnish Water Way is an approach where we all work together as a society
– from the grass-roots level to the national level – towards sustainable water management. This Strategy forms the framework for Finland’s water-related ambitions and actions until the year 2030 and provides guidance on the implementation of SDG 6 through international collaboration.

Oromia COWASH completed the training in Mombasa

A total of 13 male trainees attended the training in “leading/managing water supply and sanitation projects in Mombasa, Kenya facilitated by NETWAS. The trainees were from Oromia finance, water, education and health bureaus dealing with COWASH. The CMP Specialist from Federal COWASH team was also one of the participant. Three of the trainees were their first time out of Ethiopia. Training lasted from July 22 to August 6, 2018.

The training equipped the RWSC members on the technical and managerial issues of the WASH sector more and increased their knowledge and commitment to make knowledge based decisions and contributions to the ongoing WASH initiatives of the region in general and the COWASH project in particular. So they thank the COWASH project for arranging such a very important, timely and assistive training as it helped them to know what is going in the WASH sector outside of Ethiopia & drew good lessons.

Antsokia woreda Rural Pipe System (RPS) best practice in disability inclusion

Antsokia woreda has started a new initiative of making the water supply accessible also to persons with disabilities on the constructed two rural piped systems (RPS) from gravity springs called Gumal Baynesgie (in 2008EFY) and Lemon Sorrow (constructed in 2005EFY), serving 500 and 501 households respectively. 

The initiative to provide water directly to the households with persons with disabilities was started and pushed forward by the Woreda Water Office Head and CMP supervisor who wanted to ensure equitable access to water for all community members, mainly due to personal conviction that the issue is important and needs to be addressed.

Disability Inclusion in Dembia and Debark Woredas

COWASH Federal team made a visit to Dembia and Debark woredas to see their first trials of disability inclusive water points. Both sites were hand dug wells and construction had been completed in April 2018. It was very inspiring and positive to see some actions starting to happen on the ground to improve the practical inclusion of persons with disabilities. Read more in the report below:

COWASH Ethiopia strives on system improvement towards financial transparency and accountability

COWASH Ethiopia is serious about fiscal responsibility. We are strenuous in how we steward the community we serve and accountable to each and every penny we receive for our programme. That is why we strive to promote financial transparency and work towards ensuring financial accountability. We carefully manage the fund entrusted to us and report timely, properly and professionally. We conduct a bimonthly internal audit by COWASH staff and an annual external audit by certified accountants to learn, reflect and improve the financial system in place. Financial openness, transparency and accountability is enormously important for COWASH due to the unique nature of the programme and the programme delivery model i.e. Community Managed Project approach.
